Oblasts of Russia, this is the way countries are subdivision and organize in Russia as well as some countries of former Soviet Union. In Russia, oblasts are subjects of the Federation as they do have some degree of autonomy. First the federal cities of Russia are St. Petersburg and Moscow. Of the 83 subjects, 46 of the Russian Federation are oblasts. Always with the nicest climate, the Southern Russia borders the Volga Regions, Russia’s Central Region, the Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Georgia, Ukraine and Azerbaijan. Here you can find relaxing beach resorts along the Black Sea. And if you are into cultural destinations, try the North Caucasus. Some of the interesting mountain resort are smacked right in the center of the Teberdinsky Nature Reserve. Dombai, this is a beautiful resort that is even higher than the Alps located at Karachay-Cherkessia. So you at this wonderful spot, can do alpine skiing, climbing, hotsprings, hiking, all to your hearts content.

Elista

The capital of Kalmykia is where you should see the large and modern Golden Temple. It is a Buddhist monastery. The other recommended sight in Elista is the Museum of Kalmyk Buddhist Art. You can get to Elista by a Moscow-Elista train that goes via Stavropol or via an express minivan from Volgograd first by train. You can visit the Museum of Local Lore, the Museum of Buddhist History, the Kazansky Cathedral as well as the Gallery of Fine Arts.

Oldest City Derbent

In Dagestan at the southernmost of Russia, you can find a five thousand year old city called Derbent. It is now also a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a must see if you like historical sites. It is not just amazing, it is very impressive as well. The legendary barrier ‘Gates of Alexander’ together with the Caspian Gates of Derbent were usually identified when you mention Derbent which was build around the world’s only surviving Sassanid Persian fortress. This place has many natural resources such as minerals, coal, oil and natural gas. It is still a tribal location. They have a main mosque called the ‘Makhachkala Grand Mosque‘ that can hold up to 17 thousands of worshippers. The town of Derbent is even older than Rome. You can look for an interesting monument in the North-West part of Naryn-Kala citadel. It is an underground structure built around the 5th century.
