The West has continually asked what to think about Russia. The country where are incredibly wealthy people along with extreme poverty has always sparked confusion. Some believed that ignorance is ubiquitous in Russia, others were fascinated by the many scholars that Russia has had over time.

Russia is a land of ballet and industrial monstrosities. It is a country where faith and austerity manifest for centuries, with the cult of pleasure and opulence. If you visit the ancient castles, luxurious palaces, Orthodox cathedrals and traditional villages, you will discover the fascinating part of a country that has many things to offer.

Sankt Petersburg

Sankt Petersburg is obviously one of the cities you must visit in Western Russia. Tzar Peter the Great ordered the construction of a new city on marshy ground. Over time, St. Petersburg has evolved from a swampy area in one of the brightest cities in Europe and became the capital of the Empire, and a real window of Russia to the West. Unlike Moscow, St. Petersburg has a Baroque and Neoclassical architecture that transforms it into a truly European city.

The capital of an empire has to be full of palaces and St. Petersburg is. The St. Isaac’s Cathedral is one of the largest domes in the world and the Peter and Paul fortress has a significant place in the history of the city. Saint Petersburg is a city famous for white nights.

Although Moscow is known as one of the most expensive and the most unfriendly cities in the world, it is a must seen city in Western Russia. Moscow is a city of superlatives. The Russian capital has the most millionaires, the most expensive coffees and one of the most imposing buildings in the world. The former Soviet factories and warehouses have been converted into art galleries and nightclubs, and there is at home in Moscow.

The old town has a special charm. The Kremlin and the Red Square are the highlights of Moscow tourism and churches and monuments reminds you at every step the glory of the former Russian Empire.

Yekaterinburg or Ekaterinburg is a Western Russian city you must visit. Since the execution of Tzar Nicholas II and his family and to the mafia assassinations of the ’90s, the city of Ekaterinburg has developed a bloody history. Tourism is specific and remembers the horrors of the past, but locals can offer visitors more than the dramas of history. The center is studded clubs and cafes. However, this is where you can set the “headquarters” for you adventures in the Ural mountains hiking or skiing.
