Kazan is an important tourist destination in Russia and wirth to be visited by all those who like this diverse country. We already talked about some important religious buildings, but today we would like to present the top 3 mosques in Kazan.

The Kul Sharif Mosque is located in the Kremin of Kazan and is the largest mosque in Russia and even in the whole Europe, except Turkey. The Soltanov Mosque is located in the historical center of Kazan, near the Central Market. The Nurullah Mosque is located at the outskirts of the city and is very similar to the Kazan cathedral in Russia.

The Kul Sharif Mosque in Kazan

The Kul Sharif Mosque in Kazan dates back from the year 1652 and it gets its name from the Kul Sharif, one of the most important Muslim personalities, who fought with his students to death, for not being banished from the city. The original building was made of wood, but it was rebuilt for several times and today the mosque is built of stone. To rebuild it, the money of the Kazan municipalitywasn’t enaugh, a financial help was received from the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Today the Kul Sharif Mosque houses the Islamic Museum and there are organized and major holidays for Muslim people of Kazan and from around the city. Here you can also admire the Islamic Library.

The Mosque of the Sultan in Kazan

The Soltanov Mosque in Kazan dates back from the year 1867 and is a very important religious place for the followers of this religion. The mosque was dedicated to the sultan who ruled Turkey at that time and it is an architectural monument of great importance for the country.
The exterior of the mosque is extremely colorful, contains an approximately 10 m high tower, where tourists usually climb to admire the beautiful view of the city and the entrance is dominated by a massive walnut door, inscribed with details of the Koran. Inside of it you can find many wooden statues and a shrine dedicated to the sultan.

The Nurullah Mosque in Kazan

The Nurullah Mosque in Kazan dates back from the year 1845 and was originally built of wood together with a chapel. The mosque is built completely of stone. The building is gorgeous, it has the architectural style of the Ottoman period with a dome and a 15 meters high tower, where tourists come to admire the city panorama of Kazan and the entrance has a massive ebony door. In the year 1922, the building was used for offices and residential apartments, the miniret being destroyed. In 1950 the mosque was rebuilt serving again the believers of the Muslim religion. The shrine is dedicated to Allah, and the icons are depicting important moments from the Quran.
