The Annunciation Cathedral is one of the most visited religious monuments. The Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral is located in the historical center of Kazan. The Saint John the Baptist Church is located on the outskirts of Kazan and was dedicated to St. John the Baptist. This is known as the Epiphany Cathedral and you can find it at the address Bauman street no.2.

The Annunciation Cathedral

The Annunciation Cathedral in Kazan is a real archaeological site for Russia, because it is built within the walls of the Kremlin and was the first Orthodox church in the region. The cathedral dates back from 1552 and was planned at the initiative of Tsar Ivan. Originally the building was built of wood, but over time the city has been through many wars, natural disasters and conflicts, which led to its reconstruction for several times. Over time, the little place of worship that was found here, became a huge cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. At the day that the construction of the church was finished, Tsar Ivan IV moved the episcopate here.

The Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

The Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Kazan is one of the most famous religious monuments in the region of Naryshkin, because of the baroque architectural style and because it has been dedicated to Tsar Peter I of Russia. The church dates back from 1772 and was originally built of wood. As we mentioned above the city has gone through many natural disasters, many wars and conflicts and a devastating fire in 1850, which led to its reconstruction for several times. Today the building is made of stone.

The Saint John the Baptist Church

The Saint John the Baptist Church in Kazan dates back from 1897 and was designed by prestigious russian architects and Mihailov and Rusch in baroque style, characteristic to that century. This religious monument was also originally built of wood, but over time the devastating fire, an earthquake and the wars have destroyed it, nowadays it is completely built of red brick.

In the exterior the church has large rectangular windows, richly decorated with stained glass windows depicting the lives of the Apostles and the walls are decorated with inscriptions of Bible verses. The entrance is dominated by a massive walnut door. The tower is about 12 m high and has three bells. Inside the church are many icons painted by renowned Russian or Ukrainian artists and many sculptures from the eighteenth century.
