Novosibirsk is a charming city in Siberia, Russia, being really beautiful in winter. The snow falls there for the first time usually in the middle of November and then is getting colder and colder until February. The lowest temperatures in Novosibirsk are between the end of the year and February with an average temperature of -20 Celsius degrees, sometimes even -30 or -40 Celsius degrees. These temperatures mean that the city is covered in snow for a long time, sometimes even until the beginning of April and it looks like a winter wonderland.

You can practice different sports during this time in the city of Novosibirsk including ice skating or cross-country skiing.

If you are not so much a sport person, you might take a walk in the beautiful white town full of snow and ice sculptures, because besides the regular frosts of minus 30, minus 40 degrees Celsius, the city of Novosibirsk is renowned for the annual exhibition of snow and ice sculptures. This is a unique festival that is held every year in Siberia. In temperatures of minus 30 degrees, the snow and ice sculptures withstand several months without problems, practically as long as the winter lasts there.

The artists and the artworks of the festival

Each year, professionals from different cities of Russia come to Novosibirsk and make snow compositions. The sculptures can be seen for several months. They doesn’t melt, because the average temperature in the city of Novosibirsk is minus 20 Celsius degree, especially from the end of December until the middle of February. The snow and ice sculptures in Novosibirsk present biblical or historical scenes, fairy tale or folklore heroes from the Russian folklore. These can be seen especially in the central park of the city, the most beautiful ones being made by professionals. There are also some snow and ice sculptures in the other parts of the city made by amateurs. So you can walk anywhere in Novosibirsk and find a snow sculpture.

The construction of the sculptures

The snow sculptures are made of huge snow blocks, from snow taken from anywhere and previously pressed in wooden cubes. Those who want to make ice sculptures have to use really clear water, this being used from clean and clear parts of the rivers or ponds.

The Snow Sculpture Festival has become a tradition. It takes place every winter since 2000. Can participate to the festival both teams from all of the cities in Russia and teams from other ex-Soviet countries.
