Churches and historical buildings in Murmansk
The Russian city of Murmansk offers much more than we would think. Today we present two major churches and a historic building in Murmansk. The Church of the Saviour in the city of Murmansk is the most appreciated religious monument in the whole region. Tourists who want to admire its architecture, can find it near the lake of Semionovski.
The Saint Nicholas cathedral is located in the historic center of the city and is the religious place of the Orthodox people. The Murmansk Lighthouse was built in 2002, on the day when the city of Musmansk was founded a long time ago.
On the first floor of the building you will find the Church of the Saviour and the Memorial Museum of the Sailors.
The Lighthouse of Murmansk
The lighthouse is an important historical building in Murmansk and it was built according to the plans of the Russian architects N. Kireeva and N. Bogdanov. The complex contains several rooms and a light tower with a height of about 18 meters. If you want to admire the city from height, you can climb it.
On the first floor of the building is the Church of the Saviour, dedicated to the saint who protects the sailors of Murmansk. To get to the first floor and to climb the tower, you have to use the cone shaped wooden stairs. On the first floor you will also find the Memorial Museum of the Sailors who died during storms or other natural disasters. Here are five memorials in their honor, each with its own significance: one commemorates the sailors who died on the Russian submarines in peacetime, the other is dedicated to sailors who died on the fleet, the third commemorates the transport seafarers and those of the ice breakers, the fourth is dedicated to naval aviation pilots of the Russian Navy and the last of them commemorates the sailors from Nadvodikam who lost their lives at sea. Near the monument you can see a ship anchor as well.
The Church of the Savior in Murmansk
This Church of the Savior is dedicated to the Savior who saved the sailors of the region of Murmansk for many years and who is considered the protector of the city. The church was built in his honor in 2002 with the money donated by the city municipality.
The Saint Nicholas Cathedral in Murmansk
The Saint Nicholas Cathedral was built in 1940 in classical style, with money donated by the Murmansk city municipality and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The Cathedral is located on Lenina street no. 27A, and can be reached by trolleybus no. 2 or no. 4. It is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
